The Seaboard Air Line was quick to embrace the streamliner and was the first southern road to do so when it launched the Silver Meteor in , a move which completely surprised competitor Atlantic Coast Line and sent it scrambling to launch its own streamliner ("The Champion")."). The SAL's reasoning for the train had as much to do with practicality as it was "wowing" the public. Unfortunately, the Seaboard Air Line Railway was wedged in between the wealthy Atlantic Coast Line Railroad nearer the coast and the Southern Railway nearer the piedmont's fall line. With this fierce competition, the Seaboard Air Line Railway had not been able to accumulate the necessary financial resources to weather the lean years of the s.
The Sunland was another of the Seaboard Air Line's secondary trains connecting the Northeast with Florida (in conjunction with the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac and Pennsylvania railroads) offering a year-round schedule. As time passed the train went through a number of name changes but permanently carried the Sunland designation after the late s. In , the Seaboard Air Line Railroad merged with its arch-rival, the Atlantic Coast Line railroad to form Seaboard Coast Line Industries (SCL).
